FAQ: Tutoring over school breaks

Summer Break

School is just around the corner. We face another school year filled with hours of homework and cramming until midnight for tests. Is there anything we can do to help our son improve his study skills? Have we waited too late in the summer to get started?

It isn’t too late. Tutoring Unlimited offers a course that helps with homework, test prep and general study skills – and it can easily be completed within two weeks! The skills we teach will provide your son with tools to make class work easier, homework time more productive, and studying for tests less daunting. For more information, please contact us today.

Our daughter is in summer school with the county taking history. Much to our disappointment she is not doing much better than during the school year. If she doesn’t pass this course, she is going to be behind in her credits for graduation. How can you help us?

You are right! Your daughter certainly needs to pass this course. Plus, you and she have invested time and effort on summer school. You want something to show for it!

The credit is obviously a major concern. Another is making sure your daughter understands the material. If this course is a prerequisite to a course she will be taking this fall it is very important that she not only gets the credit but understands the material.

We have tutors who can help your daughter pass the history course. We offer support for all summer school courses, including homework help, preparation for quizzes, tests and exams.

It certainly isn’t too late to salvage the grade. Contact us today to see how we can help!

We just received our daughter’s last report card for the school year, and it appears she will be going to summer school. We would like to know if you offer any summer school opportunities. If she takes a class through the county, our daughter will be with a large group of students and have the same teacher she had during the school year.

We do offer summer school or “course recovery” during the summer, with one-on-one instruction. This makes the program completely individualized. Not only will your daughter recover the course credit, but she will gain the knowledge the course was designed to deliver. This is very important if the course is a prerequisite to one she will be taking this fall.  If you would like more information, please contact us today.

Here it is July, and the school year is quickly approaching. I had great intentions of working with my daughter throughout the summer to practice the math and reading skills she learned last year. Unfortunately, we have done little more than read a few books. Do you offer a program that follows through on my good intentions? And is it too late in the summer to make a difference?

There is still time. Reviewing the last grade or course is always a great idea as school approaches. And if a student has a good grasp of those skills, a preview of what is to come is also helpful. This will give your child a competitive edge in the classroom this fall. Our qualified tutors will work one-on-one with your child focusing on individual strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of grade or subject, the review and preview is a great way to start the year with confidence. Contact us today to schedule your first review session.

My son has really had to work hard to keep his Spanish I grade up this year. We are dreading Spanish II in the fall. Is there anything we can do over the summer to help him get off to a good start with Spanish II?

You can make a positive impact on your son’s grasp of Spanish over the summer. Summer is a perfect time to have a professional tutor assess what was causing him to struggle. Once the weaknesses are identified, tutoring will focus on improving understanding of these areas.

This doesn’t apply only to Spanish. Any class that has a prerequisite can be prepared for over the summer. One-on-one instruction makes a significant difference in a student’s understanding of any subject. Contact us today to see how we can help prepare your student to start the year with confidence!

My child is finishing the second grade, and he is not as strong a reader as I’d like. He has made it through the year, but I am worried that after the summer break, he will be behind when school starts. What can we do over the summer to improve his reading?

Summer is the perfect time to really make a difference in your son’s reading. We will match him with a tutor who is a certified reading specialist. An initial assessment will identify areas of weakness. The tutor will then target those areas during instruction.

Research indicates that individualized instruction is the quickest way to make a gain. Your son’s reading can improve significantly over the summer with a combination of tutoring, practice and parent participation.

My daughter is in summer school with the county.  It is clear to us that she is not comprehending all the material – they are covering too much each day.  What can we do to help?

It is common for students to be overwhelmed with the amount of material covered in a summer course. Five months of material condensed into four weeks is challenging at any level.

Students often have trouble comprehending all the material, let alone completing the assignments. And the problem is compounded if the course is a prerequisite for a course scheduled for the fall.

Tutoring Unlimited has tutors who can give your daughter the one-on-one help she needs to succeed in summer school and face the fall with confidence. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

We just received our daughter’s ACT scores. Disappointing. She took the test in April for the first time as a junior. We don’t know what the next step is. Do you provide ACT support?

Tutoring Unlimited provides ACT and SAT support. We offer parents a free consultation to discuss their child’s preparation for either of these standardized entrance exams. We discuss realistic goals, individual study time vs. tutoring hours and ways to improve past scores.  Once the goals are clear, we start an individualized support program.

We offer test preparation throughout the year. Summer is the optimum time to prepare due to the amount of study time needed.  Contact us today so we can help make sure your child’s next ACT scores show significant improvement.

My child is a straight A student. She does very well in school. In summer, she is usually bored by the second week of the break, so we try to register her for summer camp. This year we waited too long; they are already full. Do you offer anything during the summer for students like our daughter?

We offer a variety of choices for students in the summer ranging from academic basics such as reading, math and foreign languages to enrichment opportunities in arts and crafts, book clubs geared to grade level and reading level, Spanish for Fun, calligraphy, photography and much more. If you have questions about how Tutoring Unlimited can enrich your child’s summer contact us today!

Winter Holiday

My child has really been struggling with math this semester. He got a failing grade for the first six-week period and for the second six weeks. The third six weeks is looking the same. He just says he doesn’t understand what is going on in order to complete his work. Is there anything I can do over the winter holidays to salvage his grade for the semester?

Now is a great time to get started with a professional tutor! This is an opportune time to catch up on assignments and prepare for semester exams. Most importantly, with the holidays, your son has two weeks away from school to focus on skills not mastered and reviewing content from the last semester.

One-on-one instruction has been proven to be the most effective way to learn. You can help your child now and improve grades – and attitude – when the spring semester begins. For more information on how we can help your student make gains over the holidays, contact us today.

Spring Break

Spring Break is next week! We just had disappointing parent/teacher conferences followed by a progress report that isn’t satisfactory. Do you have a tutor who we can work with us during the break?

We certainly have a professional tutor who can work with your family over the break. You will want to do some quick information gathering – for example, checking with teachers to see what assignments haven’t been finished and what projects or papers are due when school resumes after the break. Once you have those answers, the tutor can step in to ensure assignments are completed, and they can work on gaps in your child’s skills and knowledge.

Getting extra help at Spring Break is a great idea. The end of the school year is in sight, but there is still enough time to make a dramatic difference in final grades. Contact us today for more information or to schedule a tutor.
