FAQ: Assessment and testing

My son is going to be a senior this fall. He is still undecided as to his career path. Do you offer any counseling or assessment to help him make an informed decision?

This is a timely question – for many people. The more the economy slumps, the more jobs are lost, the more people are searching for a new career path. This also applies to incoming seniors. In a tough economy, parents are even less interested in sending a child to college with an undetermined major.

Tutoring Unlimited offers an assessment that can define your son’s individual abilities, promote self-understanding, build self-confidence, guide educational choices and optimize career options. After your son completes the assessment you will have a much clearer picture of his natural abilities and a focused direction to pursue. We can provide any educational assistance or consulting that you might need along the way.

My child is an English-as-a-Second-Language student.  He is really struggling with reading. My husband and I speak mostly Spanish in our home and can’t help our son much with his studies. Do you offer services to ESL students?

We do offer services to ESL students. We typically start with a family consultation to get more information on concerns and expectations. Then we communicate with your child’s teachers to learn how your child is performing in school.  For example: Is language the reason for the reading difficulties? Is an Individualized Educational Plan in place for the student? Has any testing been done?

Once these questions are answered, we assign a tutor who is able to communicate with the family and is trained in ESL reading instruction. Results are often more effective if one or both of the parents participate in the session and learn along with their child.

My daughter is a ninth grader. She is struggling in several subjects that involve a great deal of reading. She has always been a poor reader. Is there anything we can do to improve her comprehension?

The first step to improve your daughter’s reading is to have her formally evaluated. An in-depth reading evaluation will identify any problems she is having. This will also give you direction on what steps to pursue. If reading is the underlying cause of her struggle in other subjects, addressing reading issues will certainly improve her overall performance.

Tutoring Unlimited offers reading programs that are geared to the older reader. Working one-on-one with a professional tutor is usually the quickest way to see improvement in a child’s reading. We have tried everything we can think of to help our fifth grade daughter with school. A neighbor who is a teacher suggested we have her “tested.” What does that mean? What kind of test would be given? Where can we go to have that done? What would we do with the results?

Having a student formally tested simply means that a professional, in a controlled environment, performs one or more educational assessments. The type of assessment or test depends on the problems the student is having at school. There are many types of assessments: intelligence tests, math, reading, overall academic, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD and many more.

Your child’s school may be able to administer some of these tests or refer you to a specialist who can. Typically you can have the assessments done more quickly if you work with a private organization like Tutoring Unlimited. We can refer you to educational assessment and consulting services in your area.

The report that summarizes the assessment will include recommendations on things you can do at home, things that may be done in the classroom, and probably things that a professional, such as a tutor, would be trained to implement.

My child has been diagnosed with ADHD. What can I do at home to help with her performance in school?

When your children have the classic symptoms of ADHD – inattention, impulsivity, and over-activity – there are a few tactics that may be helpful for managing homework, study time and family time.

  • Get their attention. Make eye contact. Use verbal and physical prompts.
  • Structure. Follow a consistent routine when it comes to study and homework.
  • Consequences. Be clear and consistent about what they are.
  • Write it down. Use short lists or charts with specific steps and instructions, and be clear about your expectations.
  • Behavior. Ignore what you can. Catch them being good. Really respond to appropriate behaviors. Rewards are also motivating.
  • Be specific. Work on one or two behaviors at a time such as keeping the school agenda and turning in homework. When your child performs consistently, add another.
  • Instructions. Be very clear and specific. One or two directions at a time are enough. More than that will be overwhelming.
  • Celebrate. The good news for a child with ADHD is they tend to be creative, able to multi-task, are energetic, and full of enthusiasm. Embrace these positive traits as often as you can.

We offer assessments for ADHD and tutoring with a qualified educator to assist with the recommendations. Contact us for more information.
