FAQ: ACT/SAT tutoring and test preparation

We just received our daughter’s ACT scores. Disappointing. She took the test in April for the first time as a junior. We don’t know what the next step is. Do you provide ACT support?

Tutoring Unlimited provides ACT and SAT support. We offer parents a free consultation to discuss their child’s preparation for either of these standardized entrance exams. We discuss realistic goals, individual study time vs. tutoring hours and ways to improve past scores.  Once the goals are clear, we start an individualized support program.

We offer test preparation throughout the year. Summer is the optimum time to prepare due to the amount of study time needed.  Contact us today so we can help make sure your child’s next ACT scores show significant improvement.

My child isn’t failing any subjects. Is there any reason I would consider having a tutor?

A common misconception is that tutors are only for students who are struggling in school. Families rely on tutors for a variety of reasons.

  • A particular subject is difficult.
  • Homework is a nightly struggle.
  • Focusing on tasks, completing assignments, managing time and getting organized seem to be overwhelming.
  • Home educators may need additional resources to teach every subject.
  • College entrance exams are approaching.
  • Students may need an extra challenge.
  • Reading is a struggle.
  • A boost in confidence can increase school success.
  • Study skills aren’t adequate.
  • Recommendation by a counselor or teacher for a specific need.

Tutors can be a valuable part of the academic team regardless of grade, subject or ability level – for any student who needs the benefit of one-on-one instruction. Please contact us to learn more.

My son just received his scores from the ACT exam. We were disappointed. How can we help him before the next test date?

The ACT and SAT are designed to test what has been covered in high school. Students shouldn’t have to learn new information for the tests. But many students score poorly for a variety of reasons.

  • They are nervous: The test is long. The location is usually unfamiliar. Other students may be distracting. And the results are very important. Nerves can certainly affect performance.
  • Taking the test early in the junior year is recommended so there is plenty of time to retest. But that means students are tested on information they won’t be exposed to until senior year.

There are very few students who take these standardized tests only once.

Scores from previous tests point out weaknesses and strengths and help direct preparation for the next test. A variety of study guides and courses are available for the SAT and the ACT. Parents can use these tools to help their children. But one-on-one instruction with a qualified tutor is often the most effective way to shore up identified weaknesses, build on strengths, and improve test taking skills.

Tutoring Unlimited offers a one-on-one course for the ACT/SAT. If your child is scheduled for an upcoming test date the sessions will be adjusted to accommodate the deadline. We can also work specifically on weaknesses prior to beginning the test prep program. For more information, contact us today.
